D.C.-area forecast: Frigid into early Thursday. Snow possible Thursday night and Friday.

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

3/10: The sun is bright, the snow is still nice to look at, and winds aren’t terrible. But they’re breezy enough for wind chills in the bone-chilling single digits and teens most of the day.

  • Today: Sunny and very cold, lingering breeze. Highs: Upper 20s to low 30s. (Wind chills in the single digits to near 20.)
  • Tonight: Mostly to partly cloudy and cold, diminishing breeze. Lows: Teens to near 20.
  • Tomorrow: Partly cloudy a.m., mostly cloudy p.m., light winds. Highs: Mid-30s to near 40.

After being nearly shut out for two years, we’re looking at a second shot at accumulating snow in less than a week. But first, the cold. Frigid wind chills today ease up tomorrow, when we should warm back above freezing, at least for a few hours. Late Thursday night and Friday looks like the timing for that potential snow. We’ll stay cold and windy this weekend but should be entering an extended thaw by the middle of next week.

Today (Wednesday): Sunny skies should melt a little snow, but not much as temperatures remain below freezing most of the day. Even with only a bit of a breeze, we start with wind chills in the single-digits most spots this morning. We’ll only climb to the upper 20s and low 30s for afternoon highs. Winds aren’t too bad, around 10 mph from the west, but that’s enough to keep wind chills from rising any higher than the teens to near 20. Confidence: High

Tonight: Winds diminish considerably during the evening under mostly clear skies. But temperatures tumble again, with overnight lows in the teens to near 20 as skies turn partly cloudy. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Thursday): Partly cloudy in the morning, becoming mostly cloudy in the afternoon. Not as cold with highs in the mid-30s to near 40, and not much of a breeze either. Confidence: High

Tomorrow night and Friday: Thursday evening temperatures fall back below freezing, and snow could arrive late at night, possibly snowing into at least Friday afternoon if the storm comes together as some models suggest. Doesn’t look like a big one, but could be a 1-to-3-inch or 2-to-4-inch type of storm. That’s not a firm forecast, just meant to give you an idea of the potential. We’ll have a look at more model data and provide a more detailed update later today. Confidence: Low

Winds crank up Friday night and Saturday. Friday night lows bottom in the teens to near 20, and wind chills in the single digits to near zero. Saturday highs probably don’t get out of the 20s, with wind chills in the single digits and teens, and the chance of a flurry or snow shower. Confidence: Medium-High

Still windy Saturday night and Sunday. Saturday night lows again tumble into the teens to near 20, with wind chills in the single digits to near zero. Sunday should be a little less frigid by afternoon, but still very cold with highs in the upper 20s to low 30s. Confidence: Medium

Next week seems likely to bring a major pattern change. We should be less windy with highs gradually warming into the 40s and 50s. A possible mid- to late-week storm is probably in the form of rain. Confidence: Medium

A daily assessment of the potential for at least 1 inch of snow in the next week, on a 0-10 scale.

6/10 (): Another chance for snow, most likely late Thursday night and Friday. Odds for at least an inch have edged a little higher. Upside potential is probably a few inches.
